Political Humor Shows

This is bad, really bad, and I don’t know why anyone expected anything else. This isn’t that hard to figure out.  This show is bad for the same reason that Air America was bad.  They are running this operation ass-backwards.  You start out with a show that is funny, and you political it up.  You don’t start with a show that is political and try to funny it up.  Air America screwed it up by thinking, “hey, they are making a bunch of money by being right wing on talk radio, we can make a lot of money being left wing!”  No, you can’t.  They are making a lot of money by being entertaining, and right-wing is the sideline.  Fox apparently looked at the Daily Show and said, “hey, they are making a lot of money being left-wing on cable television, we can make a lot of money being right-wing!”  No, you can’t.  They are making a lot of money by being entertaining, and left-wing is the sideline.

Funny is hard to do.  Funny every freaking day is even harder.  (Ask Frank J.)  When you limit yourself by setting up these boundries (we are going to do funny left-wing radio or funny right-wing TV) then you are missing the point.  Be funny first, and if your type of funny leans one way or the other, great.  But you aren’t funny enough to start handicapping yourself.  And if you start to think that you are funny enough that you can handicap yourself with an ideology and still bring the funny, just look at what a train-wreck the Simpsons has been since Season Six.

A Limbaugh-Coulter ticket is just as disturbing on the right as a Sharpton-Whoopie Goldberg ticket would be on the left. Nothing those people say would be able to make me laugh because every time I watched it I would feel as if I had just been kicked in the gut.

oh christ, that is horrible phelpsie, thanks for sharing.

it’s hard to be funny with all that god-fearing garbage limiting the degree to which you are willing to go for a laugh.

I appreciate all efforts though. And as we’ve seen with carrottop, sometimes really really really bad is actually funnier than funny.

If there was such a thing as stand-up horror, Carrot Top would be the king of it.

The problem is that they aren’t funny to begin with, not their morals. I’m not aware of either Rush or Ann really towing a hard morality line for themselves–they just defend people who do.

I’ve always believed leftists made better entertainers and that entertainers make better leftists. People who spend all their time in a fantasy world are far more adept at (or at least start with a built-in advantage in) drama and comedy. Alternatively, people who spend all their time in a fantasy world are more adept at leftist politics.
