I think your comment is right on, but the comments at the linked article just amazed me... the amount of vitriol directed at the girl. A number of them turned your point around, and, in essence, demanded that we punish "blasphemy" because... hey, they do!

Many of the commentors (is there such a word?) make the mistake alluded to in the adage attibuted to GBS "The customs of your tribe are not the laws of nature." Female nekkid bits are simply an affront. Period. Combine this with insulting "their" church and I get the impression that "a couple of strokes of the lash to straighten her out" would not be be objectionable to them.

Liberty for all is not their aim.

The kid has been indoctrinated, and, if she ever manages to move out of the liberal echo chamber, will probably view this as one of those "I wanna do-over" moments we all have in our life.

I wasn't raised RC, so I have no particular feelings, one way or the other, about the Pope. My wife, who was, would probably agree with the protestor, if not her... method of protest.

Maybe if scientists could ever figure out what causes conception, there would no longer be a need to murder children. It might even save 1 (kajillion) lives. Let's demand a (tax-payer supported) federal comission to research the pee-pee to hoo-hoo relationship and its effect on the whole inconvenient baby problem.

I also think abortion is immoral, but let's face it, morality is on a steep decline. Most of the time it's "free choice" idiots breeding self-serving, kumbaya idiots. I don't weep for the plight of these "adults". Surely they're better off not birthing an unloved, idiot family. It's a reap what you sow scenario.

My question is why do WE have to keep paying for their ignorance and lack of morals?

"When you are thinking about government regulations, you have to remember that at some point in time, your worst political enemy is going to have his hands on the top office, and the regulations have to be crafted so that he can’t do anything too terrible with them. "

^ That. The best and strongest argument for a strictly limited government is that your political enemy will someday wield those powers you just granted yourself to control your political enemy. How stupid do you have to be not to see that?

When I was working for HIV/AIDS my co-worker Bob and I were having a discussion once about religious beliefs as they pertain to HIV prevention. When Catholicism was mentioned Bob went into a furious tirade which he concluded by saying that the Pope was personally responsible for millions of AIDS related deaths. You don't have to be Catholic to be stunned by such a statement. I responded that unless he pulled a gun and forced millions of people into having unprotected sex the Pope was not "personally responsible." To varying degrees many people on the left have this sort of animosity not only against the Pope and Catholicism in general but against any religion with strict sexual mores.

As for the CMU person in question I regard this type of so called activism as ineffectual and perhaps even counterproductive. It''s not enough for some people to aspire to sainthood, they must also objectify their ideological foes as evil incarnate and denounce them as such. Religious fundamentalists do this and extremists on the left do this as well. I was just about to say hate is not a value but the more I think about it I think it is the expression of values, however misguided.

I can bear personal witness to that. I was charged, arrested, and tried for pointing my finger at a rent-a-cop while open carrying. No. my hand was not making a gun shape, and it was the index finger I pointed with, not the next one over. It took most of a year before a judge said that pointing at someone while wearing a handgun in a holster was not yet against the law.

And yes, I'd do it again.

If a white person were to say that black people have every same opportunity as white people in this country, critics would respond that he was not factoring in poverty and crime in the black community. So this guy talks about poverty and crime in the black community and he's vilified as confusing race issues with poverty and crime issues. IMO this speaks less to this particular white guy being insensitive as it does to many people being overly sensitive because poverty and crime continue to be issues in the communities they are trying to champion long past the point they can be reasonably blamed on white racism of the past. And for the record I'm not saying that white racism does ot exist in the present, I'm saying that the racists of today don't have the power to magically cause all the negative elements that exist in today's black communities.
