Ronnie

To me, Ronald Reagan is the President. Being born in 1976, for the first third of my life, Ronald Reagan was the only thing that I knew as a president. Ronald Reagan made me a libertarian before I knew what a libertarian was. I remember hearing him say, “Mr. Gorbechev, tear down this wall!” That was the start of my realization that freedom wasn’t something to be taken for granted. I realized that there were people who weren’t evil commies that weren’t free.

Ronald Reagan won World War Three for America and the free world. I don’t see how people can discount this. A lot of people seem to have forgotten what living under the threat of nuclear annihilation was like. (Hint: It was a lot like this.) Soviet Communism was a disease that afflicted not only Russia, but the entire world. Ronald Reagan gave the Soviet Union a chance at freedom.

And that is the best anyone can do. You can’t give a people Freedom. The best you can do is give them a chance at freedom, and they have to seize that opportunity. It is starting to look like Russia did not. Many of the surrounding states, like Latvia, did and are better for it.

Is George W another Reagan? I don’t think so, and I think Dub would agree. He is, however, following in his footsteps. He has given Afghanistan a chance at freedom. It looks like they are going to squander it. He is giving Iraq a chance at freedom. I think they are going to take it. It is what Reagan would have done.

This war for freedom is one that we are fighting in the tradition of our last libertarian president. Let’s win this for the Gipper.

We lived under the threat of nuclear annihilation, but at least in the 80’s we a had a president that we could look up to. That’s a lot more than can be said for the presidents that followed. Good post Phelps.

Dude, don’t you remember? President Reagan was the only one who didn’t know that the Soviet Union was already in decline (as a result of Truman’s…being a democrat), and his hard line actually fueled a temporary rally that kept them alive a few more years. All that dated, printed material that completely contradicts everything I’ve said was actually “The Onion”-style political humor fabricated to look like historical fact.
