The Racial Split

Dig this:

White and black Americans view Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath in starkly different ways, with more blacks viewing race as a factor in problems with the federal response, according to a CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll released Monday.

The poll found that six in 10 blacks interviewed said the federal government was slow in rescuing those stranded in New Orleans after Katrina because many of the people in the Louisiana city were black. But only about one in eight white respondents shared that view.

This doesn’t surprise me. One of the reasons that I have such a hard time taking it seriously when a black person alleges racism is that I have seen more instances where racism has been attributed to a decision where it doesn’t exist than when it has.

I went to predominately black schools all my life. (Usually between 60 and 80 percent black.) I saw this sort of shit every. single. day. “That white teacher failed me because I’m black.” No, she failed you because you are a retard. “We don’t get any good playground equipment because we’re a black school.” No, we don’t have good equipment because your older brother comes down here and hangs off all the rims until they are all bent and jacked up, and then he steals the chain nets. “They didn’t hire me because I’m black.” No, they didn’t hire you because you came in with an attitude, smarted off to the interviewer, and then told them that you wouldn’t work weekends or nights at a fast food joint. (True story.)

Racism exists. I’ve seen it. There are your true bigots out there, who really wish harm on other people. (They are usually too cowardly to actually do anything, which is good.) There are a lot more of the “Archie Bunker” bigots out there, who really don’t wish any harm on people, but just hold offensive opinions of other races. But these people are not common. They just aren’t around a lot. And here is the real deal: bigots are no longer in power. All of the bigots I know are dumb, poor rednecks in dead end jobs with no authority over anyone. They aren’t politicians. They aren’t prosecutors. They aren’t running businesses. They are driving trucks, sorting packages and turning wrenches for someone else. Maybe that truck cut you off because you are black. Maybe your order was lost at UPS because you have a black name. Both are unlikely, but more likely than that you are denied disaster relief because you are black.

Race had nothing to do with NOLA response. Nothing. What had to do with the NOLA response is a complete failure of the NOPD, the NO mayor’s office, and the people of NOLA. The NOPD and NOLA happen to be mostly black. Make what you will of that. I see it as a failure of the Nanny State mentality. The apartment complex I am living in now is about 50% black. I have no doubt that we would see nothing like NOLA if you filled all the first story apartments with water and cut off the power. There wouldn’t be looting, there wouldn’t be starvation, and you wouldn’t see dead bodies floating everywhere.

Where white people could be incompetent in LA, they were. (Look at Blanco.) Where black people could be incompetent in LA, they were. (Look at the NOPD.) New Orleans has no one to blame but New Orleans. We’ve tried to help you before, and you wasted the help. We are trying again, but you aren’t making it easy.

(Side note: I saw the first refugee in our complex today. LA plates, University of LA New Orleans parking sticker in the window. Nice looking kid, maybe 20. Heard him talking to someone on the phone on his landing, telling them, “yeah, I’m here, and I’m ok.” I’ve also learned that if you see a car with LA plates, stay away from them. Traffic laws and signs are mere suggestions to them, and they are apt to wander all over the road in random directions and speeds. I see it as the broken window theory at work. If they are this flippant in how they drive, I am not surprised that they started looting as soon as The Man looked away.)

During the Michael Jackson trial there was this older black lady in my office who got really pissed off and she told me (I’m not lying) “The only reason they are going after Michael Jackson is because he’s black!” That statement was wrong on so many counts I couldn’t even respond. I just gave her a blank look until she went away.

Hell, I’m not even convinced he’s Michael Jackson anymore. I watched part of his Babawa Wawtas interview, and I don’t think that… it… could even pass a Turing Test.

Everybody droped the ball on this disaster, I guess that’s why they cal it a disaster

…And a nice article in general.

New Orleans Drivers: They are drunk, and they stay drunk. It’s a different world down there, unlike other party towns in whom the main partiers are tourists, in New Orleans the main partiers are the residents. Tourists take a far backseat to the depredations and debauchery of those folks.
