Frank Luntz did another focus group of the debate. Trump fared poorly.
A lot of the support for Trump among the Aware is simply a big “Fuck You” to the GOP establishment. When they stop pushing Jeb and Kasich, then you’ll see a sizable shift away from Trump to people like Cruz and Paul.
I think it is different for the Unawares (which is what Luntz curates for his group.) These are people who only deal in what Limbaugh calls the Drive By Media. They get little snippets.
What are the snippets on Trump? “Trump has now said (something that liberals think is outrageous) and you should be terrified of him now!” And the Unawares immediately dismiss it.
I think the thought process goes like this:
I don’t think it is anything more complex than that. Trump isn’t a particularly likable guy. He’s terrible on policy. He gets my FU vote, but that doesn’t explain the Unawares support. If they are doing it as an FU to the media, then it all makes sense — and it also explains why they don’t like him when they actually get him unfiltered by a media report.
